Slips and Trips
With Slips & Trips causing around 40% of workplace accidents, be sure you're taking the right precautions to keep your employees and customers safe!
Slips and Trips are the most common cause of injury at work, making up an average of 40% of all reported major injuries. These can also lead to more serious injuries, especially when linked to falls from heights.
The Health and Safety at Work etc Act (HASAWA) requires employers to ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone who may be affected by their work, so far as is reasonably practical. This includes protection from slips & trips or reduction in risk.
In order to fully reduce the risks of slips & trips, a full risk assessment is required to find and deal with any risks that could occur. There are steps that can be made in order to protect others in areas where there are higher risks of slips & trips.
In some situations, more advanced methods would need to be used but in others, there are simple ways to control slips and trip risks and prevent accidents in the workplace. Some examples include -
Stop floors becoming contaminated - using entrance matting, fixing leaks from machinery or buildings and designing tasks to minimise spillages.
Use the right cleaning method - removing spillages promptly, using appropriate detergent mixed at correct concentration and having effective arrangements for both routine cleaning and dealing with spills.
Consider the flooring and work environment - check for loose, damaged and worn flooring and replace as needed, make sure lighting is sufficient and that slopes or steps are clearly visible and keep walkways and work areas clear of obstruction.
Get the right footwear - where floors cannot be kept clean and dry, slip-resistant footwear can help prevent slip accidents.
Think about people and organisational factors - consider how work is organised and managed.
These steps can be taken to reduce the risks of slips and trips in certain areas.
But be sure you've done a full risk assessment in order to protect employees and customers from any risks
