Remembrance Sunday is an important day for the entire Nation to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom

 

 


With it being Remembrance Sunday let's look at the symbol we use to help honour those that were lost during the war, the poppy has been the symbol of remembrance since 1921 after The (Royal) British Legion was formed. 9 million silk red poppies were made and sold due to the popularity of the poem In Flanders Field by the Canadian Doctor Lt Col John McCrae, this came to be the very first 'Poppy Appeal' and raised over £106,000. The money raised was used to help WW1 veterans with employment and housing. To this day the poppy appeal still goes on every year raising money for veterans.
